How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

There's no guaranteed way to get an assistant to cite you — nobody outside the model providers controls that, and any answer changes with phrasing, model version, and a live retrieval pass. What follows are the practices that, based on how these systems fetch and generate answers, plausibly improve your odds — not a promise of a result.

1. Make sure the bots can actually reach you

Before anything else: confirm robots.txt isn't blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended. This is the most common silent failure — a default block from a CDN or page builder, not a deliberate decision. Check and fix it with the AI crawler robots.txt generator.

2. Write pages an assistant can quote

Put the direct, factual answer to the question a buyer would ask near the top of the relevant page, in plain rendered text (not JavaScript-only, not buried under three paragraphs of brand copy). This "answer capsule" shape — a short, self-contained statement of the fact — is what a generation model can lift cleanly into a synthesized answer. Check your current pages against this shape with the AI answer snippet checker.

3. Add structured data

Schema.org markup (Organization, FAQPage, Product) doesn't force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about who you are, what you sell, and what questions you answer — which matters when a retrieval system is choosing between several plausible sources for the same query. Generate yours with the Organization schema generator or FAQ schema generator.

4. Publish an llms.txt

A short, plain-text file describing your site for AI systems. It's an emerging, low-cost convention — see what llms.txt is and whether you need one — that costs almost nothing to add and can't hurt. Build one with the llms.txt builder.

5. Earn third-party mentions

Our own probe data shows independent review sites and third-party roundups getting cited alongside or ahead of vendors' own pages for the same buyer intent (see benchmarks). Assistants weight independent corroboration — a mention on a site that isn't yours reads as a second, unbiased source. This is the slowest lever here and the one closest to traditional PR and outreach, not a technical fix.

6. Check where you stand, then repeat

Since none of the above can be verified by asking the assistant directly (see why it can't self-report), the only way to know if any of this is working is repeated, external sampling across real buyer intents — which is what a visibility scan does.

Frequently asked

How long until I see results?

We don't have a timeline to give you — assistant citation behavior depends on factors outside anyone's direct control (retrieval indexes, model updates, what else gets published about you). Treat this as ongoing hygiene, not a campaign with a fixed end date.

Is there a paid service that guarantees a ChatGPT citation?

Be skeptical of any claim like that — no one outside the model providers can guarantee a specific generated answer, on any given query, cites a specific domain.

Does this replace SEO?

No — see AEO vs. SEO: what actually changes for how the two overlap and differ.
