AEO vs. SEO: what actually changes
SEO optimizes for a ranked list; AEO optimizes for being quoted inside a generated answer. They share a lot of groundwork — crawlability, clear factual content, structured data — but the end object each one targets is mechanically different, and that difference changes what "success" looks like.
The core mechanical difference
Classic search (SEO's target) returns a results page: a stable, ordered list of links for a given query, built from an index the engine already crawled. Assistant search (AEO's target) returns generated prose: a fresh synthesis produced per query, that may quote or cite a handful of sources inline, with no fixed "page 1 position" to hold. Optimizing for a ranked list and optimizing for a quotable inline citation are different jobs, even when they draw on overlapping content work.
What stays the same
- Crawlability still matters. Both classic search bots and AI-assistant crawlers need to be able to fetch your pages — see which bots to check for.
- Clear, factual content still wins. Content that states a direct answer plainly serves both a ranking algorithm and a generation model reading for a quotable span.
- Structured data still helps disambiguate who you are and what you offer, for both systems.
- Third-party authority still matters — backlinks for SEO, independent mentions for AEO serve a related trust-signal role, even though the mechanisms measuring them differ.
What's genuinely different
- Measurement. SEO has a stable, pollable object (the SERP) that rank trackers monitor on a schedule. AEO has no equivalent — see why rank trackers can't see ChatGPT. The only way to measure AEO is repeated, structured sampling.
- The unit of success. SEO: a position (1 through 10, or not ranked). AEO: whether you're one of the sources a generated answer happens to cite — which can vary run to run for the identical query.
- Content shape. SEO rewards keyword-relevant pages that satisfy search intent broadly. AEO rewards short, self-contained "answer capsule" statements a model can lift cleanly into a synthesized response.
- Volatility. A SERP position is relatively stable between crawls. An assistant's citation choice can differ between two nearly identical prompts in the same session — there's no cached "current ranking" to check.
What we won't claim
We won't tell you AEO replaces SEO, or that classic search traffic is going away — it isn't, as far as any evidence we have shows. This is an additional discipline layered on shared groundwork, not a rebrand of SEO or a reason to abandon it.

Is AEO the same thing as GEO?
Yes, in practice — see what generative engine optimization (GEO) is for the synonym history.
Should I stop doing SEO and switch to AEO?
No — they target different, still-relevant surfaces. Most of the groundwork (crawlability, clear content, structured data) serves both.
Can I track AEO the way I track SEO rankings?
Not with the same tool or method — see why rank trackers can't see ChatGPT for the structural reason.
