Why your rank tracker can't see ChatGPT
Because there's no ranking to track. Traditional rank trackers work by re-querying a search engine's results page — a stable, ordered list of positions 1 through 10 — and recording where you land. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini don't produce that. They generate a synthesized answer that may or may not cite you, and the answer changes with phrasing, model version, and whatever a live retrieval pass happens to return. There's no position to record, so a position tracker has nothing to read.
The structural mismatch
A rank tracker (Ahrefs, Semrush's Position Tracking, Moz, and similar tools) is built around a specific object: a search engine results page, which is a stable, indexable list your domain either appears on or doesn't, at a specific position. That object exists because classic search returns the same type of page for the same query, and the tracker can poll it on a schedule.
Assistant search has no equivalent object. The "answer" is generated prose, produced fresh per conversation from a live retrieval-and-generation pipeline, and it is not stored anywhere a domain owner can query after the fact. Two different users asking the same question, seconds apart, can get answers that cite different domains. There is no stable page to crawl, so the entire mechanism a rank tracker depends on — poll a fixed surface, record position — doesn't have anything to attach to.
What this means in practice
Your rank-tracking dashboard can show you at position 1 on Google for a keyword while you have zero AI-assistant citations for the equivalent buyer question — or the reverse. These are two different measurement surfaces that happen to look similar (both are "am I visible for X") but require entirely different instrumentation. A green rank-tracker dashboard tells you nothing about what ChatGPT or Perplexity actually cite when a buyer asks the assistant version of the same question.

Do any rank trackers monitor AI-assistant citations at all?

Should I drop my rank tracker?
No — Google and Bing search still matter, and rank trackers do that job well. This is an addition, not a replacement.
Will AI-assistant answers ever have a stable "position" to track?
Not in the way SERPs do, as far as any public assistant currently works — answers are generated per query, not served from a cached, orderable list. Sampling repeatedly is the closest available substitute for a "ranking."
