Capability gap

Can ChatGPT tell you if it recommends your website?

No. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini have no way to self-report whether they've cited your site — not because they're hiding it, but because none of them keep a queryable log of past answers that you or they can look up. If you ask, you're not getting a report — you're triggering a new, one-off search.

Why not — the structural reason

When you type "does ChatGPT recommend [my site]" into ChatGPT, it doesn't check a record of what it told previous users. It runs a fresh, live web search for that one prompt, in that one session, and generates an answer on the spot. That answer is a new sample, not a lookup — the assistant has no introspective access to its own citation history across other users' conversations, and no product surface exposes one. Perplexity and Gemini work the same way: each grounded answer is generated fresh from a live retrieval pass, not read back from a stored log.

This is true even across a single session. Ask the same assistant the same question twice, or phrase it slightly differently, and you can get a different answer — different sources retrieved, different domains cited, sometimes a different recommendation entirely. There's no canonical "the answer" to compare against, because the assistant isn't retrieving a stored ranking — it's generating a response conditioned on whatever the live search happened to return that moment.

Why asking it yourself doesn't tell you much

Even setting the introspection problem aside, one prompt in one session is a sample size of one. Real buyers searching for your category phrase things differently, use different assistants, and ask at different times as models and their indexes change. A single "does ChatGPT recommend me" check reflects one phrasing, one model, one moment — not the range of ways your actual buyers ask, and not what happens on Perplexity or Gemini at all.

What actually works

The only way to get a real read is to sample from outside the assistant: query multiple live assistant-search lanes across a realistic set of buyer-phrased intents, on a dated run, and record exactly who gets cited. That's a structured, repeated, external probe — not a single anecdotal prompt — and it's the only way to see a pattern instead of one data point. It's also the entire premise of AttractOS's scan: we run that probe for you and show the raw evidence, not a guess. See how the probe works, or run one on your own domain — free.

Frequently asked

Does ChatGPT remember what it told other people?

No. Each conversation is generated independently; there's no shared, queryable memory of prior answers across users.

Is there an official "check my citations" API from OpenAI, Perplexity, or Google?

Not one that reports historical citation behavior back to a domain owner. The closest thing is running your own repeated, external samples — which is what a visibility scan does.

If I ask twice and get cited both times, does that mean I'm safe?

It's a better signal than one ask, but still a tiny, self-selected sample of one phrasing on one assistant. Treat it as a data point, not a guarantee.
